Pairing Wines with End of Summer’s Bounty

It’s time. The summer is winding down as the sun’s angle changes in the sky. And along with that comes summer’s amazing harvest of fresh flavors. And there’s no better way to enhance your end-of-summer feast than pairing your vegetables and fruits with a good wine!

Sweet, sweet summer.

A chilled glass of rosé is a warm-weather favorite. It’s a perfect partner to a refreshing watermelon salad or a perfectly ripe peach. The subtle floral flavors of this vibrant pink wine go well with fruit, balancing the sweetness and enhancing the fresh flavors.

If you’re in the New England area, you know the summer season is short, so you might be trying to get in as much grilling as possible during these next few months. The beloved and ubiquitous zucchini is now gracing everyone’s table. Try grilled with eggplant and peppers fresh from the garden or the farm, and pop open a crisp Sauvignon Blanc with this medley. The wine's minerality and grassy tones will balance the grilled vegetables' smokiness. Our blog about pairing wine with grilled foods offers many great suggestions for meats and veggies.

The end of summer is also the time of year when everyone tries to devour the luscious, juicy gift of real vine-ripe tomatoes before they disappear for another ten months. Whether creating a simple Caprese salad or a fresh tomato and pasta dish, you can’t go wrong with a Pinot Noir, Gamay, or another light-bodied red. The slight earthy notes of these wines balance the semi-sweet tang of fresh tomatoes and can elevate even the humblest tomato-based dish to a new level.

Fresh and delicious!

Last but certainly not least, in this end-of-summer bounty is corn on the cob. Whether it’s grilled, steamed, or cut off the cob in a salad, your go-to wine would be your favorite Chardonnay. The creamy, buttery mouth feel and vanilla notes complement the flavor and consistency of the fresh corn. Once you see how delightful this pairing is, you’ll want to enjoy the two together all the time.

Here is a toast to these final weeks of summer. They can be bittersweet, with slightly shorter days on the horizon, yet it’s also a time when farmer’s markets are overflowing with magnificent produce. Enjoy!
