Rise and Wine! 5 Benefits of Drinking Wine in the Morning

Whether we drink it in the evening at dinner or enjoy it in celebration, it’s no secret that wine helps us unwind after a long day. But what about drinking wine in the morning? Today, we’re going to look at how responsibly drinking wine before noon can benefit your health and make you happier.

Start your day in a healthy way:

Drinking a glass of wine, especially red wine, can have tremendous health benefits. This is thanks to the fact that red wine is packed with antioxidants such as resveratrol, quercetin, and procyanidin. While we certainly don’t expect you to memorize these (or possibly even pronounce them), you’ll want to remember the great benefits they can have. When consumed in moderation, red wine can lower bad cholesterol, boost your immune system, help manage weight, and even help prevent heart disease and cancer! So you can sip and smile, knowing that you’re not just doing good for your taste buds but for your body each morning.

Make your morning memorable:

Speaking of remembering, red wine has a surprising benefit in that it helps improve memory. Veronica Whitte, a neuroscientist at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin in Germany, found that "from a clinical point of view, our findings suggest that regular, high-level intake of resveratrol in the elderly may convey protective effects on cognitive functions.” These findings are great news for senior wine-drinkers, who can benefit from the memory-enhancing properties of resveratrol in red wine. So long as they don’t forget to have a glass every morning and enjoy responsibly.

Taste truly untainted:

In the morning, your tastebuds are untainted by the “tastes of the day,” leaving your palette more sensitive to new sensations. This is excellent news for wine drinkers, as it’ll allow you to savor your wine more fully and heighten your ability to taste wine like a true sommelier. Whether you’re drinking a more substantial red wine or a crisp white, a cleaner palette will help you take in the subtle flavors and notes of good wine. One word of warning, though. Remember not to brush your teeth before drinking wine, as toothpaste and wine do not mix...trust us on that one!

Wine is best friends with breakfast:

As you may have experienced from our recent wine and donut pairing we did with Union Square Donuts, wine and breakfast foods are BFFs!  But, donuts—as delicious as they are—are only one of many examples. Here are a few more promising pre-noon pairings:

  • Sweet breakfast foods such as pancakes or french toast — Prosecco

  • Light seafood for brunch such as smoked salmon — Sauvignon Blanc

  • Sweet & savory combos such as chicken & waffles — Bubbly Champagne

These are only a few examples to spark your imagination and show you that wine is far more than a dinner time drink. So next time you’re frying up some eggs or breaking out the OJ, consider pouring a glass and discovering some matches of your own to make for a magical morning.

If nothing else, it’ll make you happy:

Red wine is particularly effective at helping you unwind, and it’s not just the alcohol at work either! Those phytochemicals we discussed earlier can naturally calm the body and even block enzymes that heighten anxiety and stress! While many drink wine in the evenings to let go after a busy day, drinking it in the morning can help you start things off with less stress. Another thing you can try if you meditate is adding a glass of wine to your morning meditation routine to further enhance its calming effects.

In summary:

Wine is a versatile beverage that can be just as beneficial at the break of the day than at the end of it. Whether for the health benefits, the calming properties, or the incredible pairings, you’ll be glad you did! So next time you’re enjoying a sunrise, pour yourself a glass and toast to the great things that await you.
